Question 7:

I have chosen to compare and contrast the Meyerhoffer Surfboard with The Channel Islands Surfboard, 'The Fishcuit'.

Meyerhoffer Surfboard
The Fishcuit

AESTHETICS:

Similarities- Both of these surfboards come in a variety of different colours and they both have an extremely unique shape, that a regular surfboard doesn't have.

Differences- The Fishcuit, wouldn't stand out as much as the Meyerhoffer, because it looks like a regular surfboard, until the bottom area of the surfboard, instead of curving throughout the whole board.

COST:

Similarities- The cost of these surfboards, both rise, as the size of the board gets bigger.

Differences- The difference in cost of both these surfboards is only marginal. However, the Fishcuit Surfboard  is slightly cheaper than the Meyerhoffer Surfboard.

ERGONOMICS:

Similarities- Both of these products, come in a variety of different lengths. This is good, as the surfboards can appeal to both teenagers, and adults.

Differences- The Fishcuit Surfboard would be more comfortable because of the shape. The shape of this surfboard doesn't make the width increase on the board where you are meant to sit. This will give the surfer a better experience of comfort on the board.

SAFETY:

Similarities- The Fishcuit and the Meyerhoffer Surfboards, are made out of a strong and durable material, which will make better use out of the boards.

Differences- The Fishcuit is safer than the Meyerhoffer Surfboards, as it doesn't flick up when surfing on a wave. Instead, it stays in the water, not causing any harm to the surfer.

SIZE:

Similarities- Both of these unique surfboards, have many sizes, which range from short to long. These means, people wont have to worry, about not having a board available for their height.

Differences- As the Fishcuit board gets bigger in height, the width of the board also increases, whereas, the Meyerhoffer board, only the height increases.

FUNCTION:

Similarities-These two surfboards, are both designed to be an easier experience for beginner surfers.

Differences- The Meyerhoffer Surfboard has many different features which represent the board, which can be a longboard or a shortboard.

ENVIRONMENT:

Similarities- They are both made out of biodegradable materials, which can severely harm the environment.

Question 6:

State either the ENVIRONMENTAL, SOCIAL or ETHICAL impacts the innovation is aiming to improve.

The Meyerhoffer Surfboards are trying to make a positive, social impact. Surfing is a form of physical activity, and a great way to lose weight, get fit and be healthy. This could also result in reduced obesity rates. Getting up early and going for a surf on a Meyerhoffer Surfboard could be a great way to start the day. It could also turn out to be an enjoyable hobby or leisure for some people and others could take up the sport professionally.

Question 5:

Discuss, using examples, the POSITIVE and NEGATIVE aspects of this innovation's design. Use the ACCESS FEE acronym.

AESTHETICS:

Positive- These surfboards are extremely unique, mainly because of their shape. The shape of these boards are, round at the bottom, pointy at the top and curvy the whole way through the rest. The Meyerhoffer Surfboards are sure to stand out from far away as they come in a variety of bright colours.

Negative- Seeing that these surfboards are such a unique shape, buyers might think that they wouldn't be as safe or ergonomic as other surfboards. For example, they might think that having a curve at the bottom of the board, wont make it turn as well, as having a point there.

COST:

Positive- The Meyerhoffer Surfboards, range from $499-$599 online, however they are more expensive at shops. The prices that these boards are at most shops, range from $645- $895. All of these prices do vary of the size of the board you get. For example, the smaller boards are going to be cheaper than the larger boards.

Negative- However, if you compare the prices of these surfboards, to a regular surfboard they are quite expensive.

COPYRIGHT:

Positive- These boards aren't copyrighted because of the unique shape, size, function and overall experience of the board. For example, no other board, is designed to turn, ride and nose- glide all in one.

ERGONOMICS:

Positive-The ergonomics of the Meyerhoffer Surfboards, are that the size is great, as it comes in many different lengths for all different sizes and that the shape of these unique boards, will help to get through the water quicker and easier for surfers whether they are beginners or advanced surfers..

SAFETY:

Positive- The Meyerhoffer Surfboards are made of a strong and durable material. Therefore, this product would last for a long time.

SIZE:

Positive- These boards come in a large variety of sizes. This is great, as they will appeal to a large group of surfers, no matter what their height is. For example, the 7 foot, 6 inch and 9 foot, 2 inch.

Negative-Although, because the Meyerhoffer Surfboards are still very large, no matter what length you get, they aren’t very convenient, to take with you. These surfboards won’t fit in everyone’s car, they will be a hassle to get on and off, public transport and it will be very difficult and strenuous for people who have to carry it for long periods of time.

It also has features from a longboard and shortboard, which help to achieve the function of the boards.. These boards can turn more easily and paddle faster than your regular surfboard.

Negative- Even though, this surfboard makes surfing for the first time, a whole lot easier, you still have to have a basic knowledge of surfing. For example, you have to know, the procedure of standing up on the board, before you can actually do it. You also need to know water safety, before going out into the water and surfing, otherwise you could be putting yourself in danger.

ENVIRONMENT:

Positive- The Meyerhoffer Surfboards, are quite environmentally friendly, because during the process of manufacturing this product, there was no harm done to the environment.

Negative- However, these surfboards are also harming the environment by the material its made of. The material that these surfboards are made from, is non- biodegradable, which means it can't break down. In the long run, this could severely damage the environment.

ETHICS:

Positive-These surfboards are ethical, because, during the development and manufacturing of these surfboards, nothing was harmed. For example, no plants, animals or people were damaged or used during the making of the product.

Negative- Although, these surfboards are encouraging people, of all ages, to go out into the sea where it is the sea animals domain. This is also trespassing many different sea animals properties.
